Studies

The Master’s Program International Media Studies is a four-semester,
full-time program for further education. It is a joint project from the
University of Bonn, the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and
Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster with its headquarters in
Bonn.

The bilingual Master’s Program offers a unique course offer given the
current development of global media and the connection between media and
cooperative development. Students from around the world will benefit from
the inclusion of partners and the
unparalleled mix of research, lectures and practical experience.

The program combines topics like media and development, journalism,
communication science and media economics, while developing practical skills
and competencies that are important for the world of media.

*Philosophy
*Free and independent media is a significant factor for a functioning
democracy, social justice and the protection of human rights. The Master’s
Program is based on the belief that there is a connection between democracy
and development, between the freedom of opinion and democracy as well as
between free media and development. The prerequisite for the establishment
of a functioning, free media system are journalists who realize their role
as a critical observer and reporter. This can only be guaranteed when they
are professionally trained and feel obligated by a set of journalistic
ethics.

By training journalists academically, the Master’s Program is therefore a
targeted step towards making the media spokespeople for openness within
democracy.

The courses are based on the values of democracy, freedom and conflict
prevention, civil society and good government – representative of the
connection between the media and cooperative development.

*Objective*
Students will acquire the knowledge and skills that are essential for a
journalistic career. They will be able to meet specific occupational
requirements with expertise and communicative independence.

The Master’s Program trains students – personally and professionally – to be
competent journalists and prepare them for a challenging role as expert or
manager in the media sector.

*Target Group*
The program is targeted at students from around the world that want to work
in a position of responsibility in journalism or the communications sector.
It especially addresses journalists-in-training, media representatives from
radio, TV, online and print and communication experts.

Those interested must have already completed an academic program (bachelor’s
or equivalent) and have at least one year of professional media experience.

The program will be bilingual (English and German), whereby English will be
the prevalent course language.

- Journalists-in-training, especially from electronic media
- Journalists and management from community radio stations
- Communication experts
- NGO employees
- Employees from ministries
- Employees from cooperative development groups and projects

*Scholarships*

15 Scholarships will be awarded to applicants from Africa, Asia, Latin
America or Eastern Europe. The scholarship will be about 750 Euro covering
your cost of living and costs for accommodation. The tuition fee and the
flight will be remunerated, too. A committee will decide which applicant
will receive a scholarship.If you would like to apply for a scholarship, you

Statistical Methods for Dealing with Item Non-Response in the NATSAL 2010 Sex Survey

Applications are invited for a fully funded three year PhD studentship, funded by the Wellcome Trust, in the field of Medical Statistics.

The British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (NATSAL) is the only representative sex survey of the general population. It was previously conducted in 1990 and 2000, and will be repeated in 2010. NATSAL findings have frequently informed sexual and reproductive health policy in Britain, and the 2010 survey will enable estimates of key parameters to be updated and changes over time to be assessed. As with all large surveys, missing data create problems for the analysis of the NATSAL. Missing data arise both from potential participants declining to take part in the survey and from participants not answering all the survey questions. This PhD project will concentrate on the latter type of missing data. It will investigate how statistical methods for handling missing data can be applied to the NATSAL and how the sensitivity of the survey findings to assumptions about the mechanisms determining which data are missing can be assessed.

The project will involve assessing existing statistical methods, adapting them to the needs of the NATSAL data and, possibly, the development of new statistical methodology. The student will be registered for PhD study and based at the Centre for Sexual Health & HIV Research, University College London, where he or she will work together with the NATSAL team including Dr Andrew Copas, and will spend one day a week at the Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit in Cambridge with Dr Shaun Seaman, who will be the lead supervisor. The student will also meet periodically with Dr James Carpenter at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who completes the supervisory team.

The three institutions (UCL, MRC BSU, LSHTM) are all at the forefront of international research in medical statistics, and the links with each will provide the student with access to leading researchers, many other PhD students, training opportunities and regular seminars.

Applicants should have completed, or expect to have before starting their studies, a Masters degree in Statistics or equivalent. The studentship provides a stipend for three years of around £19,500 p.a. in the first year, increasing subsequently, and meets the tuition fees for UK/EU students. For students from outside the EU, it is possible that alternative UCL Overseas Research Scholarships could cover the difference between the overseas fees and the UK/EU fees subject to a separate application and selection process (deadline 1/5/09, further details in the application pack). Applicants must fulfill the normal academic requirements for acceptance for postgraduate study at UCL.

Job description:

Two PhD Scholarships within the Integrative Innovation Management unit are vacant from 1 June 2009 or soon after for a period of three years. Integrative Innovation Management is a cross-disciplinary research group that bridges two faculties: Social Sciences and Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark. These positions are anchored at the Department of Marketing & Management in Odense and require enrolment in the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Applications are invited from candidates with a Master's Degree.

The vision for Integrative Innovation Management is to integrate the partial approaches to innovation management by developing new methods and producing scientific insights into the innovation process by applying a theory-driven approach to support empirical results. The approach is founded on engineering perspectives combined with marketing and management aspects.

To exemplify, the group is developing research projects within the field of sustainability and innovation and open innovation. One proposal could be to develop a framework for supporting integrative and methodical product development in the renewable energy sector. Another proposal could be to study open innovation practices, in particular emphasising value co-creation among interrelated actors utilising network and learning theories. However, these suggestions are only indicative of possible PhD proposals.

We therefore invite project proposals within the broad field of integrative innovation management. Especially, we encourage project descriptions from the perspectives of marketing and management as well as integration with engineering aspects on integrative innovation management. The research unit welcomes applicants with background within engineering, business economics (especially marketing and management) and economics.

As part of the PhD programme, an individual education programme within the field of business administration has to be completed. You will be expected to complete a six-month stay at a research institution abroad and, over the period of the programme, to acquire experience of teaching or other types of presentation. You are also expected to participate in the various activities within the research units and – apart from your stay abroad – to be routinely present at the unit.

Modelling habitat use of red deer for improved wildlife management in protected areas

PhD position (University of Bayreuth)

Description
The Biogeographical Modelling group is looking for a highly motivated PhD student to take part in a research project on modelling studies for wildlife management in protected areas, funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt DBU.

Environmental conditions for red deer in the Bavarian Forest National park have changed substantially in recent years, through e.g. large scale bark beetle disturbances or removal of the border fence to the Czeck Republic. Further research needs arise from initiatives of the Bavarian Forest National park to bring its wildlife management closer in line with its philosophy of "let nature be nature".

This project aims at (1) an improved understanding of the factors determining habitat use of red deer in the Bavarian Forest National park, (2) a process-based description of the spatial distribution of red deer activities, e.g. browsing, and (3) the development and evaluation of alternative management strategies. The project is part of a larger research program that integrates studies on the dynamics of forest succession, ungulates and lynxes.

The PhD student will analyze existing telemetry and land cover data with statistical methods like state space models, and develop a dynamic simulation model for the habitat use of red deer. There will be opportunities to develop and follow up on own ideas.

The project is conducted in close collaboration with partners from the Bavarian Forest National Park Administration (Dr Marco Heurich) and the ETH Zurich (Dr Lorenz Fahse).

Qualification
Applicants should hold an MSc or Diploma degree in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Geoinformatics, Physics, or related disciplines. A strong interest in wildlife biology, quantitative ecology and computational methods is essential. Knowledge in the fields of ecological modelling, spatial ecology, GIS, programming (R, C++), and statistics is advantageous.

Salary and conditions
Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (Tv-L 13/2). Preferred starting date is 1 May 2009. The position is available for three years.

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards

Teaching Assistants work part time in term-time, aiding staff in various teaching-related duties. Conditions of Work

Amount of Award
The current amount of the award is living expenses paid at the current EPSRC national minimum rate plus an honorarium (currently £1,575 per annum) in recognition of Teaching Assistant duties. In addition, the School will pay your University fees (at the current home student rate). Teaching Assistantship is a scholarship, not a job. As such, there is no requirement to pay income tax or National Insurance contributions on this award.

PhD Research fellowship position
at the Department of Electric Power Engineering within “Transformer Insulation”

At The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Department of Electric Power Engineering, there is one vacant position as research fellow (PhD position). IME-009-2009

The project deals with pre-breakdown and breakdown phenomena in dielectric liquids for improvement of transformer designs and knowledge build up for next generation insulting liquids. The PhD work will mainly be of experimental nature focusing on breakdown in full scale oil gaps in a high voltage test cell utilizing advanced high speed camera technology. Molecular aspects and influence of additives in insulating oil model systems will be studied. The project will be run in collaboration with SINTEF Energy Research and it is part of a research network which includes Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Experience in high voltage engineering or physics is required. The project is funded by ABB and close interaction with the industry is scheduled.

Ph.D. position in microbial ecology - Microbial Ecology Research Group

The research group Microbial Ecology is part of the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. The group studies the adaptive strategies of prokaryotic microorganisms that allow these to survive in complex natural habitats. One of the topics focuses on the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem functioning. The research is strongly multidisciplinary and includes microbiology, ecology, molecular biology and plant physiology and ecology. The group provides a lively and internationally oriented scientific environment with excellent facilities.

Project
A major goal in general ecology is to understand the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning. Ecological theory predicts that ecosystems with a higher diversity of species are more productive and more stable in the face of stresses and environmental fluctuations. Amongst the different components of biodiversity, the diversity of functional traits of species in a community is considered to be the best predictor of the related ecosystem process. In this context, we recently used experimental communities of bacterial species to evaluate the role of bacterial functional diversity on community processes. Diversity had indeed a positive effect on community function and we were able to demonstrate the relevance of the complementarity of species for resource use capacity in shaping biodiversity- ecosystem functioning relationships. The main goal of this PhD project is to use a similar model system to address the role of bacterial diversity in respect of the
stability of the communities. You will be responsible for designing experiments with bacterial communities to test theories related to the diversity-stability relationship. You will apply classical microbiological methods to determine community functioning. You will develop and apply molecular methods for the quantification of bacterial species, as well as statistical models to untangle the effects of diversity components on community stability. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Microbial Ecology center (UMR5557, Université Lyon1) in Lyon, France.

Requirements
You have a Masters degree or equivalent degree in microbiology/microbial ecology, with a strong background in general ecology or in ecology with interest in working with microbial model systems. Experience with the application of molecular methods in the study of the complex communities is an advantage. The project is demanding and asks for dedication as well as a creative mind. Good proficiency of the English language is required. The Ph.D. candidate is expected to attend a few courses and to assist in teaching students at different levels (10% of time).

Conditions of employment
The university offers a salary of € 1633, to 2443,– gross (bruto) salary per month. Objective of the temporary 4 years position is to produce a number of research articles in highly ranked, peer-reviewed scientific journals, which will form the basis of the thesis leading to the granting of the Ph.D. degree (Dr.) at the University of Groningen. The department deadline for recommending the applicants for scholarships for overseas students for 2009 entry is 1 March 2009 so you should aim to submit your application by the middle of February to give it time to be considered and processed. Competition is extremely high for the overseas scholarships so you will need to have the equivalent of a first class honours degree from a recognized university. You should have achieved the standard level on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) which would be an overall grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the subtests.

In the past 5 years remarkable progress has been made in the chemistry of low oxidation state and low coordination number s- and p-block compounds. It is now possible to prepare and investigate the fascinating reactivity of such compounds, many of which were thought incapable of existence until a few years ago. Our group is one of the leaders in this field and have made a number of recent landmark advances (see for e.g. Science, 2007, 318, 1754; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2008, 47, 9079; Chem. Commun., 2008, 6285; J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2006, 128, 2206)). The positions on offer will involve an extension of this work and will see you acquiring many synthetic, spectroscopic and computational skills. The possibility may also exist for you to spend 6 months working in a collaborators laboratory in one of a number of European or North American Universities.

You must have a first class Honours degree in Chemistry (or an equivalent qualification) . You should be highly motivated, organised and work well in a team. Funding is available for a PhD studentship in the School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh for a collaborative project with the School of Chemistry, University of St Andrews. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) constitute one of the most exciting developments in recent nanoporous-material s science, with potential applications in many areas, including catalysis, gas separation and storage. The major advantage of MOFs over more traditional porous materials, such as zeolites, is the greater scope for tailoring these materials for specific applications due to their modular synthesis from corner units (generally metal ions or clusters) and linker units (organic molecules able to bridge the metal corners).

The project
Hydrogen is a potential future automotive fuel as well as an important industrial feedstock. For fuel-cell applications, as well as in many industrial processes, high purity is required. The hydrogen required can be produced either by generating it from steam reforming or methanol cracking processes or by recovering it from hydrogen-rich process streams by adsorbing the impurities using pressure swing adsorption. Such streams are readily available in refineries and petrochemical plants and are sometimes burnt as a waste stream. The scope of this project is to design new adsorbents for hydrogen purification using computational and experimental methods.

The studentship
The studentship is available immediately for a period of 4 years. The studentships provide a tax-free EPSRC stipend (currently £12,600 per annum), plus university fees at the Home / EU rate. Additional funding might be available to cover the overseas fees for highly qualified non-EU citizens.

For this project, collaboration between the chemical engineers at the University of Edinburgh and the chemists at the University of St Andrews is a very important element and the successful candidates will spend significant periods of time at the partner institutions, learning about material synthesis and characterisation. The ability to be a team player and to work in close collaboration with a team of chemical engineers and chemists is therefore essential.

The successful candidates will have a first class or 2.1 degree, or equivalent, in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related subject. As the project contains a substantial computational element, some programming experience in FORTRAN or a similar programming language is desirable though not essential.

PhD position in fjord modelling at CMU, BCCS
A three-year PhD position is available at Unifob AS. The place of employment will be at Bergen Center for Computational Science (BCCS) within the Computational Mathematics Unit (CMU).
BCCS has approximately 50 employees counting 20 different nationalities. The center operates the high performance computing facilities of the University of Bergen, and has units within high-performance computing (Parallab), bioinformatics (CBU), and mathematics (CMU). The staff at CMU consists of professors, senior scientists, scientists, post doctoral fellows, and PhD students. CMU carries out research funded by industry, research councils and the European Commission and currently focuses on problems within hydrodynamics and geophysics.
The PhD candidate will work on a project which is financed by the Research Council of Norway and is a collaboration between BCCS, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bergen, Institute of Marine Research and Norwegian Institute for Water Research.
BCCS’ part of the project aims to use 3d non-hydrostatic terrain following ocean general circulation models to investigate propagation of pathogens and food and faeces in Norwegian fjords connected to the fish farm industry. Special interests will be connected to identifying possible accumulation sites of pathogens and spreading of waste from the industry. The PhD candidate will perform process studies of fjords and assist in the development of model tools.
The applicant must have a master's degree in mathematics, geophysics, civil engineering or equivalent. The applicant must have a good background in mathematical/numerical modelling preferably in geophysical hydrodynamics. Applicants must have good skills in English.
The PhD student will enter an approved programme leading to the degree of PhD within a time frame of three years. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.
Salary in accordance with the Civil Service pay grade table scale for PhD students; currently NOK 353 200 gross per year; following ordinary meriting regulations. System Engineer

A permanent position as a system engineer is immediately available at Unifob AS, Bergen Center for Computational Science (BCCS) within the High Performance Computing Laboratory (Para//ab). The center operates the High Performance Computing facilities of the University of Bergen and is related to computational sciences in Biology and Environmental Sciences.
The team of system engineers at Para//ab is concerned with installation, implementation and maintenance of the High Performance Computing facilities, grid related tasks as well as a pool of PCs. The High Performance Computing facilities currently comprise a 3.5Tflops cluster, a 51Tflops Cray XT4 supercomputer as well as disk- and tape storage. The grid activities are related to the compute-cluster and the storage facilities and provide corresponding services. The pool of PCs comprises about 50 Linux and Windows machines. The team currently consists of five engineers.

The new position is related to the administration of the pool of PCs. The new system engineer will be concerned with the operation and maintenance of the desktop machines at BCCS and web-related tasks. His or her work will be closely related to the work of the whole team.

Researcher in Grid Computing

A two-year position as a researcher in Grid Computing is available at Unifob AS, Bergen Center for Computational Science (BCCS) within the High Performance Computing Laboratory (Parallab). BCCS operates the High Performance Computing facilities of the University of Bergen and is related to computational sciences in Biology and Environmental Sciences.
Parallab operates the High Performance Computing facilities, is involved in Grid Computing and conducts research related to High-Performance Computing and Applied Mathematics. The group currently consists of 12 researchers and engineers. With respect to Grid Computing, Parallab is involved in one national and two international Grid Computing projects. The new position is related to one of the international Grid Computing projects with partners from Ireland, Scotland, Poland and Italy. The project aims at realising a distributed Data Grid infrastructure for storing and evaluating large amounts of scientific data arising from Scientific Computing simulations. The focus of the work will be on the development of abstract meta-data descriptions and high-level analysis tools with emphasis on statistics, time-series analysis, and feature extraction.

The Seminar for Applied Mathematics of ETH Zuerich (http://www.sam. math.ethz. ch/)offers a full PhD position in the framework of a project on "Sparse Tensor Approximation Methods for High-Dimensional Transport Problems".

Sparse tensor product approximations also known as sparse grids have emerged as a powerful tool for the numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems in areas as diverse as quantitative finance, deterministic methods for stochastic PDEs, and data mining. The area is still rapidly evolving and offers fascinating research opportunities. Researchers at the Seminar for Applied Mathematics of ETH Zuerich are among the leaders in the field.

In this project sparse tensor product approximation is to be explored as a novel approach to kinetic equations, see http://dx.doi. org/10.1016/ j.jcp.2008. 02.025 . The PhD project will have a focus on efficient algorithms and data structures, which is an exciting challenge in its own right. The PhD work will be jointly supervised by Prof. C. Schwab and Prof. R. Hiptmair.

The positions is temporary and limited to 3-4 years after a three month period of probation. The holder will be regular ETH research staff and receive a gross salary of roughly 66,000 Swiss Francs (about
EUR 41.000, USD 55.000). The positions will involve teaching of tutorial lectures, supervision of undergraduate students, and grading of examinations equivalent to a total workload of about 10h/week.

Candidates must have a master or diploma degree in mathematics, a (computational) engineering discipline, or in (computational) science. Their education record should indicate strong interest and exceptional skills in computer simulation as well as familiarity with important numerical methods for the approximate solution partial differential equations (finite elements, finite volumes, etc.). Experience with object oriented programming in C++ is essential.

The Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH) are pleased to announce the availability of a limited number of PhD Research Scholarships. These scholarships are available for the five specialisationsin the PhD programme at NHH: Accounting and Auditing, Economics, Finance,Management Science and Strategy and Management.

Each scholarship is for a period of four years and combines taking the PhD programme at NHH with working as a PhD scholar. PhD scholars are required to work as a teaching and/or research assistant for the department they are admitted to on enrolling in the PhD programme. The work load is 25%, with the remaining 75% being dedicated to the successful completion of a PhD.

The annual salary for the PhD Research Scholarships is set according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale for PhD research scholars: State salary scale 45, which is currently 353,000 NOK gross. The scholarships are subject to Norwegian taxes and benefits, including health care provision and membership of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The University of Milan has launched the fourth round of Renato Treves
International Research Doctorate in "Law and Society", established by
the University of Milan and relative to the University of Milan
Graduate School in Law Sciences, for the year 2009.
The research doctorate course is run in partnership with the
University of Milan-Bicocca, the University of Insubria, the
University of Bologna, the University of Urbino, the Centro nazionale
di prevenzione e difesa sociale in Milan, the University of Lund, the
Carlos III University of Madrid, the University of Antwerp, the
University of the Basque Country and the Oñati International Institute
for the Sociology of Law. An agreement between the above mentioned
Institutions has been signed for the academic years 2007/2010.
Upon this agreement the University of Milan and every above mentioned
Italian and foreign partner participate, through their specific
competences and educational structures, to set up a doctoral
international educational programme in "Law and Society".
This Doctorate course offers an international training curriculum
whose purpose is to train research doctors to be not only experts in
"contextualised" research into legal institutions, but also aware of
the ethical and political dimension of the field studied.

PhD doctorate candidates are trained both by taking part in intensive
courses, whose character is eminently that of the seminar, held at the
University of Milan and/or the other Italian and foreign universities
participating in the programme, as well as at the Centro nazionale di
prevenzione e difesa sociale in Milan, and above all by conducting
their own individual research projects, in which they are expected to
ensure the maximum degree of integration between benchmark theories
and research methods.
Held mostly in English, the doctorate course includes a six-month
period of study and research at the partner institutions or at other
related scientific institutions.
At the end of this period of study and research and once a positive
evaluation has been achieved, the PhD student will attain the
qualification of Research Doctor issued by the University of Milan, on
condition that the period of training is recognised by the foreign
partner universities, which may also recognise the same qualification,

period of study and research.
The Renato Treves International Research Doctorate in "Law and
Society" is relative to the Italian study area 11 – Law Sciences and
to the scientific-discipli nary sectors IUS/20 and SPS/12, shall last
three years and is co-ordinated by Professor Vincenzo Ferrari, Full
Professor by the Faculty of Law of the University of Milan in the
scientific-discipli nary sector IUS/20 – Philosophy of Law.

Recently, an interdisciplinary research project was approved by the UNESCO-IHE Partnership Research Fund (UPaRF).
This project will form part of the broader successor programme of SSI, in which the following institutes collaborate: UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (Delft, The Netherlands) , University of Dar Es Salaam, University of KwaZulu Natal, Delft University of Technology, the International Water Management Institute, Sokoine University of Agriculture and the Stockholm Resilience Centre.

Project description

The project focuses on the semi-arid areas of sub-Saharan Africa, where 95% of the total agricultural land is used for rainfed agriculture, water availability is scarce and highly variable, and average yields often remain below 1 ton per ha. The resilience of the farming systems is low as well, due the large (and increasing) variability of the hydro-climatic conditions and a limited capacity to adapt. As a result, crop failure is the norm. Water availability is a key entry point to improve crop productivity in these regions (Falkenmark and Rockström, 2004).

The research and outreach programme of “Smallholder systems innovations in integrated watershed management” (SSI-1, 2004-2008) thus focused on the identification and application of innovative agricultural water management practices that offer opportunities to increase both food security and safeguard environmental integrity. The impact of these innovations on food production and ecosystems has been studied at field and watershed scale at sites in the Thukela river basin in South Africa and the Pangani river basin in Tanzania.

There is a growing awareness that a real transformation of the countryside will only be possible if innovative soil and water technologies and land and water management practices are adopted, and locally adapted, at a large scale and in combination with increased fertilizer use (see e.g. Rijsberman, 2004; Polak, 2005; Rockström et al., 2007). Only then will rural areas be able to transform from their current position of marginalization and poverty to a motor of socio-economic development (Prahalad, 2004).

Since the conditions under which such a transformation may occur, as well as the potential impacts at different scales, are still ill-understood, a new project will focus on the socio-economic and bio-physical conditions and impacts of upscaling these innovations.

This new project (SSI-2, 2008-2012) will take note of some new drivers that influence the opportunities for agricultural innovation and rural socio-economic transformation: increasing food prices, increased access to information in the rural countryside, climate change impacts, and the limited access of farmers to energy sources in the face of an increasing global demand for biofuels (e.g., de Wit and Stankiewics, 2006; Uhlenbrook, 2007). The two PhD research projects form part of the broader SSI-2 programme.

PhD Project 1: Water processes at different spatial scales
This research theme addresses the hydrological implications for up-scaling land and water system innovations. The objective is to gain better understanding of the interactions between processes linking local and larger scales.

The analysis focuses on how the dominant hydrological processes may change at different spatial scales. The research builds on the understanding of the hydrological processes gained during SSI-1, with a stronger emphasis on groundwater- surface water interactions and potential implications of/for land management changes. It is hypothesised that surface-groundwater interactions are critical to the impacts of water system innovations, and that it impacts vary with scale and different physiographic characteristics.

This hypothesis will be verified in the field and the results used for predictive modelling to determine impacts of up-scaled use of WSIs on water quantity and quality for downstream users under different scenarios. The surface-groundwater interactions (including wetlands) are also crucial for the hydrological variability and water resources availability at different scales and, consequently, for the provision of ecosystem services.

Research question: What are the hydrological impacts of small scale farming activities, incl. water system innovations, across different scales? Particular attention will be paid to different types of rainwater harvesting, supplementary irrigation and full scale irrigation.

Methodology: Understanding the hydrological impacts of small scale farming activities across different scales, requires the understanding of the hydrological processes at these scales. This research will take up the small scale hydrological understanding (project 3.1) and investigate the large scale (500-5,000-45, 000 km2) hydrological processes through the use of remote sensing data combined with field observations (incl. hydro-chemical and tracers studies). Of particular interest is the groundwater surface water interaction (incl. generation of wetlands) and the impact of this on the downstream water availability (PBWO, 2006). A process-based distributed hydrological model will be developed to investigate different scenarios of uptake and extent of the small scale farming activities. This study will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Stefan Uhlenbrook, Dr.Jan Willem Foppen, Dr Shreedhar Maskey (UNESCO-IHE) , Dr. T.A. Kimaro (UDSM).

The following applies to the position:
- All topics will be carried out in a so-called sandwich construction with different phases at UNESCO-IHE in the Netherlands and field research in Tanzania (with regular contacts with Tanzanian and Dutch
supervisors) .
- PhD positions are funded with a fellowship for which NUFFIC regulations apply.
- Starting date: April 1, 2009 for 4 years.
- Qualifications: M.Sc. degree (average mark: 80% or above) in a discipline relevant to the topic, e.g. environmental engineering, socio-economics of the water sector, hydrology and water resources.
- The applicants must demonstrate a strong interest and experience in conducting interdisciplinary research.
- The applicant should be willing to co-operated with other researchers in the SSI-2 programme
- The applicants should be willing to co-supervise MSc research projects.

Obesity, which has doubled since 1993, increases the risk of several cancers. Diabetes, itself increased by obesity, has been linked with some cancers but evidence is sparse. Diabetes UK has funded a three-year studentship to assess the relationship between diabetes (both diagnosed disease and raised blood sugar) with cancer incidence and mortality, using one of the world's largest datasets of health examination surveys of nationally-represen tative samples, linked to mortality and cancer registry data (Health surveys for England and Scottish Health Surveys). The planned interdisciplinary supervisory panel will be Drs Mindell and Shelton with Profs Marmot and Hochhauser.

Several fully funded Ph.D. positions in machine learning, speech recognition, handwriting recognition and robotics are available at the Reservoir Lab

Project
Current state-of-the- art speech & handwriting recognition systems still perform much worse than human beings who can effortlessly decode the speech or
handwriting of most people, even in fairly adverse conditions (e.g. the presence of noise in case of speech recognition) . The fact that the human brain works so efficiently is owed to its self-organizing capacity, its deeply hierarchical approach, its adoption of unsupervised and supervised learning strategies, its capacity to adapt almost instantly to new circumstances, etc. Why not try to build an automatic speech recognizer and handwriting recognition engine that incorporates the same principles? This is exactly what we will do in two recently approved projects:

* ?Self-organized Recurrent Neural Learning for Language Processing?
(ORGANIC), funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Program. Details about the project can
be found at the preliminary reservoir computing website (http://reservoir- computing. org).
* ?Reservoir Computing for auditory pattern recognition? (RECAP), funded by the Research Program of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO).

The research concerns the investigation of architectures and algorithms for the efficient
learning of large recurrent neural networks based on the Reservoir Computing concept
(where only a linear readout layer is learned in a supervised way whereas the recurrent
connections are fixed or trained in an unsupervised way). Important research topics are
the unsupervised learning of a large hierarchy of recurrent sub-layers, and the
integration of various adaptation techniques. The application domains are off-line
handwriting recognition, speech recognition and various aspects of robotics (such as
robot localization, motion control, ...). So far we were able to demonstrate that
reservoirs can give rise to the robust recognition of digits spoken or written in
isolation, but now we want to demonstrate that they can also yield robust recognition of
continuous speech and handwriting (large vocabulary).

Requirements
Candidates should have a Masters degree in Electrical, Computer or Physics Engineering; cor in Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science. A good knowledge of English is essential.
No professional background is required, but the ideal candidates have some acquaintancecwith Machine Learning, programming (Python, Matlab, ...), statistics, signal processing, speech recognition, control engineering, or robotics.

The job is in the area of computer graphics, mathematics, geometry.
This is a part of the NRF-MDA funded project entitled "Visual and
Haptic Rendering in Co-Space" which commenced on 15 December 2008. The
work will be carried out at the Centre for Advance Media Technologies
(CAMTech), School of Computer Engineering of Nanyang Technological
University, Singapore. The goal of the project is to propose an
efficient interoperable mathematical model defining geometry, visual
appearance and tangible physical properties of virtual objects in
shared Co-Space - 3D virtual shared space on the web. The object
definitions must be small in size and invariant to the rendering
platform used in Co-Space. The particular goals of the project include
development of the fast interactive definitions by implicit and
explicit functions, description of complex geometry using parametric
partial differential equations, introduction of function-defined
physical properties to objects in Co-Space, and development of several
exemplar applications illustrating the usefulness of the proposed
approach, including an ability to establish physical contact with
other party in Co-Space through haptic devices.
The project includes but not limited to the following tasks:
- Definition of complex shapes with implicit, parametric and explicit
functions
- Parameterization and implicitization
- Definition of interactive shapes using partial differential equations
- Accelerating rendering of the shapes defined by mathematical functions

The University offers a generous package of support to outstanding doctoral research students through the Durham University Doctoral Fellowship scheme. The scheme provides:
* Full payment of tuition fees at home or overseas rate
* A maintenance stipend at the national rate (£13,290 in 2009/10)

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the standard University and department admissions criteria and have applied to the University for admission in the session 2009/10, as a registered research student, to a course of full-time study for a PhD. Students who are already registered for a PhD course are not eligible to apply for an award.

Nature of Awards

Awards will normally be extended for another two years subject to progress being deemed satisfactory by the academic department and the Graduate School's Postgraduate Awards Sub-Committee. If extended, the award would continue to provide a full waiver of fees, a maintenance award at the nationally agreed rate and a research training support grant.

Fellows will be required to participate in a programme of academic activities designed to further enhance their development as researchers. Details of this programme will be provided to Fellowship holders at the start of their programme of study.

The first Call is for two scholarships. One is a general university scholarship. Another scholarship is linked the realization of an internationally co-tutored project in collaboration with the University of Cergy-Pontoise or Paris X and involves a compulsory period of study and research (up to 18 months) at one of these institutions. The amount granted for these scholarships is € 13,638 per year and this is exempt from personal income tax. They will be granted for the entire duration of the PhD course and will be increased by 50% during authorized study periods abroad.

SICSA prize studentships are worth around £18, 000 per year for 3 years. They include support for living expenses of at least £12, 940, research expenses and a contribution towards postgraduate fees at the UK standard Home/EU rate (currently £3315). Students who are not UK/EU residents must pay the higher overseas student fee of around £11,500 per year. If you are awarded a SICSA studentship, you may apply to the admitting university for additional support to cover the difference in fees. Giessen University's International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded by the German federal government's Excellence Initiative, offers a three-year structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. With its excellent research environment, a doctoral programme which is tailored to the needs of PhD students and the intensive personal support it provides, the Graduate Centre offers postgraduate students optimum conditions for their PhD-projects and a custom-made preparation for the time thereafter, both with regard to academic and non-academic careers.
From 01st October 2009, the GCSC offers

up to 9 PhD scholarships.

PhD scholarships include a monthly stipend of approximately €1000 and are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of a year. Scholarships commence on October 1st, 2009.

Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study programme and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active involvement in at least one GCSC graduate research group. Scholarship holders must register as PhD students at Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester. Topic:

Pathway-based tumour characterisation by alignment against
cell
panels along multiple molecular dimensions.

Research:

Astra Zeneca Oncology has constructed large cell panels to serve as in
vitro models for drug response. These cell panels have been extensively
characterized by mutation analysis, mRNA expression, aCGH, response to a wide
variety of drugs, micro-RNA expression and phosphoprotein characterization. In
parallel, the same measurements are being performed on a collection of
colorectal samples. In this project two aims are pursued. First, a comparative
analysis will be performed between the cell line data and the tumor data to
determine the multi-dimensional molecular states spanned by the cell lines and
whether these states faithfully recapitulate the space spanned by a
representative and clinically relevant selection of tumor samples. Guided by
this mapping and by following a pathway-based approach, integrative modeling
will be applied on the cell line panel data to construct models predictive of
resistance.

Job description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the bioinformatics
analysis of the cell line and tissue data. More specifically, these tasks
include 1) constructing a comprehensive gene list of the PI3K and ERK network;
2) Molecular characterisation of the colorectal cell panel and tumour samples
through integrative analysis of the various data sources within the space
spanned by the identified network genes and 3) Pathway-based alignment of cell
panel to tumours to determine the extent to which the cell panel recapitulates
the heterogeneity in the tissue set.

Location:

The position is embedded within the Bioinformatics and statistics group lead by Dr Lodewyk Wessels (http://bioinformatics.nki.nl) at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam and the Oncology Informatics group, Discovery Medicine, Astra Zeneca, Alderley Park, UK lead by Dr Tim French. We plan to have regular meetings, and the postdoc will also spend time at both locations.

Requirements:

Candidates should fulfill the following criteria.
- MSc or PhD in one of the following areas: bioinformatics, engineering, computer science, statistics, physics, biotechnology, or biology.
- Knowledge of fundamental aspects of cancer biology, especially signalling pathways.
- Knowledge of fundamental aspects of computer science
(algorithms and data structures, programming languages).
- Knowledge or experience of informatics.
- Knowledge of statistics, artificial intelligence or bioinformatics is highly desirable.

Conditions of Employment:

The successful candidate will be employed by the Netherlands Cancer
Institute. The employment conditions follow general employment rules as laid

The New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) scheme offers the
opportunity to people from selected developing countries to undertake
development- related studies in New Zealand.
This may include study related to education, health, rural
livelihoods, governance, human rights, or economic development,

The accumulation of human sperm cells at boundaries is ubiquitous in the
laboratory setting, and is therefore likely to influence the path of a
sperm during its passage along the female reproductive tract. However,
very little is known about the details of such mechanics especially how
it is affected by surface topographies. This is despite the fact that
sperm have to navigate increasingly convoluted surfaces and folds along
the human fallopian tubes, creating a very complex geometry on the
journey towards an egg. Sperm found in the vicinity of an egg are
hyperactivated, which is characteristed by high amplitude tail beating.
This has led to the hypothesis that hyperactivation is necessary to
prevent excessive sperm trapping within crypts of the fallopian tubes.

Consequently, the initial aim of this project is to use high speed
imaging in the classification of hyperactivated human sperm motility
using kinematic and biophysical parameters. This will require a limited
amount of experimental work in the laboratories of collaborators at The
University of Birmingham. The subsequent aim will be to develop models
of hyperactivated human sperm, using the imaging data to ensure typical
beat patterns are correctly represented. We will then investigate the
mechanisms and mechanics by which sperm progress across convoluted
topographies and escape from fallopian tube crypts. Such studies will
require cutting-edge mathematical and computational modeling in the
areas of low Reynolds number flows and filament-fluid interactions.

Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification

Funding is available for a PhD studentship in the School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh for a collaborative project with the School of Chemistry, University of St Andrews. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) constitute one of the most exciting developments in recent nanoporous-material s science, with potential applications in many areas, including catalysis, gas separation and storage. The major advantage of MOFs over more traditional porous materials, such as zeolites, is the greater scope for tailoring these materials for specific applications due to their modular synthesis from corner units (generally metal ions or clusters) and linker units (organic molecules able to bridge the metal corners).

The project
Hydrogen is a potential future automotive fuel as well as an important industrial feedstock. For fuel-cell applications, as well as in many industrial processes, high purity is required. The hydrogen required can be produced either by generating it from steam reforming or methanol cracking processes or by recovering it from hydrogen-rich process streams by adsorbing the impurities using pressure swing adsorption. Such streams are readily available in refineries and petrochemical plants and are sometimes burnt as a waste stream. The scope of this project is to design new adsorbents for hydrogen purification using computational and experimental methods.

The studentship
The studentship is available immediately for a period of 4 years. The studentships provide a tax-free EPSRC stipend (currently £12,600 per annum), plus university fees at the Home / EU rate. Additional funding might be available to cover the overseas fees for highly qualified non-EU citizens.

For this project, collaboration between the chemical engineers at the University of Edinburgh and the chemists at the University of St Andrews is a very important element and the successful candidates will spend significant periods of time at the partner institutions, learning about material synthesis and characterisation. The ability to be a team player and to work in close collaboration with a team of chemical engineers and chemists is therefore essential.

The successful candidates will have a first class or 2.1 degree, or equivalent, in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related subject. As the project contains a substantial computational element, some programming experience in FORTRAN or a similar programming language is desirable though not essential.

Coronary heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the western
world. Recent advances in high performance computing and medical imaging
have lead to the development of detailed models of vascular structure
and blood flow respectively. These techniques now enable the simulation
of perfusion through three dimensional representations of vascular
geometry. However, there are two difficulties with these classes of
models: (1) the computational simulation of flow through complete
vascular beds from feeding vessels to capillaries is computationally
prohibitive and (2) it is impossible to measure flow in all vessels and
thus fully validate such models for clinical application. Recent
developments in Perfusion MRI and Nuclear Medicine by our clinical
collaborators at St Thomas' Hospital now provide the ability to
accurately measure blood volume in cardiac tissue. This presents an
opportunity to develop a novel modelling framework to explicitly address
these limitations by linking vascular structure to whole organ perfusion
through the application of a multi-scale porous-flow model.

The goal of this project will be to develop models with the potential to
directly interpret clinically acquired perfusion images and guide
revascularisation strategies in the heart. The methodology will be based
on homogenizing discrete vascular structures by applying previously
developed asymptotic approach. A key mathematical challenge will be
adapting the multiple scales technique to the hierarchical branching
structure of blood vessels. This may lead to a continuum sub-model for
each generation of vessel (e.g. capillaries, arterioles, small/large
coronary vessels) which are coupled to produce a full multi-domain and
multi-scale representational of coronary perfusion. These predicted
perfusion fields will be mathematically validated via comparison with
the perfusion fields determined using the discrete model whose structure
was used to define the porosity tensor. Finally the model will be
applied to human data collected at St Thomas' to assess the clinical
potential of the approach.

The collaborators on this project are Professor Jos Spaan (Department
Medical Physics, University of Amsterdam) and Professor Eike Nagel
(Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital).

Cryosphere Subgrid Parameterization and Computation, starting 1 March

The expected outcome of this project is a method that allows for
continental- scale modeling of permafrost, snow and glacier mass
balance in mountain areas under present and simulated future climate.
This is important because the mountain cryosphere influences a large
proportion of the global land mass and population, experiences high
rates of climate change and is currently inadequately resolved in
regional climate models due to the dominating influence of sub-grid
variability. This project will provide a proof of concept for the
inclusion of topography sub-grid schemes into climate models as well
as applications of mountain cryosphere models over large mountain ranges.
Applicants are required to have successfully completed a Masters level
degree in a relevant area, e.g., Climatology, Meteorology, Computer
Science, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Geography or Earth
Sciences. Programming skills (low level such as C/FORTRAN and high
level such as Matlab/IDL) and experience with GIS are important
assets. You have a very good standard of written and spoken English
and will be working in a heterogeneous and multi-disciplinary

2. The use of alternativ materials for remediation of sulphide-
bearing mine waste

During remediation of mining waste, the most important goal is to
decrease the inflow of oxygen to the sulphide minerals. This is
usually obtained by applying a sealing layer with so low hydraulic
conductivity that it always has a high degree of water saturation.
Till with a high clay content is commonly used in Sweden. In this

3. Effects of hydropower production on river-near

Hydropower production results in changed water levels in regulated
rivers. Short-term water level changes result in changed eco-systems

4. The use of Cu-isotopes to quantify the role of microbes in
geochemical key reactions such as preciptation and dissolution of
minerals

During the latest years it has become possible to detect and analyse
the small changes in isotopic composition which chemical and
biological processes cause also for stable metals such as Cu. The
research team at Applied geology in Luleå is leading in Sweden in
development of such analyses, and in the development of applications
of them. The aim of this project is to develop methods for analyses
of Cu-isotopes in different materials, and to use such analyses to
quantify the role of microbes in geochemical key reactions such as
dissolution and precipitation of minerals in oxidizing mine waste.

5. Optimization of surveys of polluted areas

About 1 billion SEK is spent annually in Sweden for surveying and
remediation of polluted areas. The guidances for how to perform
sampling, anlyses and interpretations of, for example, polluted
soils, are vague and insufficient. The aim of this project is to
improve surveying of polluted areas, by geostatistical studies av
finished and ongoing objects.

6. Remediation of sulphidic mine tailings using green liquor dregs;
solving two waste problems at the same time

Mining results in large amounts of waste, waste rock and mill
tailings. If this waste contains sulphide minerals, oxidation may
result in the formation of acid mine drainage. The aim of this
project is to study if green liquor dredge, an alkaline rest product
from the paper industry, can be used as water and oxygen barrier in
sealing layers in remediation of mine waste. The green liquor dredge
may also buffer acidity produced by the oxidizing sulphides.

taxed under different regimes. Especially the taxation of capital
income was a major novelty since the tax on the presumptive return is
unique in the world. The reform involves a quasi-natural experiment
and offers an opportunity to identify various behavioural and tax
elasticities. This research aims to estimate elasticities at a number
of these behavioural margins, such as the debt-equity decision, the
choice of legal form by small firms, the decision to retain or
distribute profits, and the investor portfolio choice between owner-
occupied housing, pensions and widely held shares. The estimated
elasticities will be used to calibrate an applied general equilibrium
model that we will develop and which focuses on the tax treatment of
capital income. The model allows for a comprehensive welfare analysis
of the tax reform of 2001. Moreover, it can be used to analyse
alternative tax-reforms such as the adoption of a consumption tax or a
comprehensive tax on capital income, which includes a tax on capital
gains.

Abstract Ph.D. project 2 – Skill formation in distorted labour markets

The main question of this research proposal is: how do modern welfare
states and distortions in labour markets affect the incentives for
skill formation over the lifecycle? Labour force participation, hours
worked, and later retirement raise the returns on human capital
investments from initial schooling and on-the-job training, and vice
versa. Less human capital investment results in lower wages, and
thereby reduces the economic incentives to participate in the labour
market, to work more hours, and to retire later. Extensive welfare
states and imperfections in labour markets could be important in
explaining weak labour market performance and, as a result, weak
incentives for skill formation. Labour market imperfections and
welfare state policies may also shift the wage profile over the
lifecycle, thereby affecting the incentives for training on-the-job
and (early) retirement. Analytically tractable general equilibrium
models will be developed to study the interactions between distorted
labour markets and skill formation. Various labour market
imperfections (caused by unions, search frictions, efficiency wages,
or insiders-outsiders) and welfare state policies (education policy,
minimum wages, wage subsidies, labour market protection legislation,
tax policy, unemployment insurance, retirement schemes) will be
analysed. The policy relevance of this project is high. Firstly,
skills are crucial determinants of labour productivity and income.
Secondly, skill-biased labour demand shifts jeopardise the earnings
and employment prospects of the low skilled and increase income
inequality. Thirdly, low labour force participation rates of older
workers are worrisome in light of ageing populations.

University. During the first year Ph.D. students are required to
participate in the M.Phil. program in economics of the Tinbergen
Institute to upgrade their skills in macroeconomics, microeconomics

affairs and DG Taxation), CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy
Analysis and the Ministry of Finance.

Requirements

Applicants should have successfully completed a master's degree (or
equivalent) and have excellent analytical skills. Moreover, they
should have a strong command of English. Especially graduates in
econometrics or economics with a specialization in general economics
are invited to apply. However, we also welcome graduates with a
background in mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, information
sciences, biology, engineering, or philosophy. We require that
applicants have a genuine interest in economics, economic policy,
politics or society at large.

Contract and salary

The initial contract will be for 1.5 years. The terms of the contract
are in accordance with the Collective Agreement on Labour Conditions

Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship funded by the Leverhulme Trust to research into the use of synthesized music as probe stimuli to determine parameters of acoustically critical spaces such as concert halls, cinemas, lecture theatres, recording studios and listening rooms.

When measuring room acoustics with traditional methods, loud and unpleasant test signals are inevitably used in most cases to maintain sufficient signal to noise ratios. These noisy probe stimuli are intolerable to audience, and consequently, in-situ, occupied measurements of rooms are rarely carried out. This hinders our understanding of the acoustic properties of a space when it is in a realistic in-use situation. The project will develop a new method that employs purposely synthesized music to replace the noisy test signals to enable occupied measurements. The synthesized signals will have to satisfy musical aesthetic requirements, as well as a scientific need of being suitable for the measurement: - a paradigm where science and art meet. Signal processing algorithms will be developed to resolve impulse responses from the received new music. The method will advance acoustic measurement techniques and enable better understanding of architectural
acoustics.

Suitable candidates will have or expect to obtain a good Bachelor's (a minimum of a 2.1 Honours Degree), or preferably a Master's Degree in a suitable area (e.g. acoustics, physical science, engineering or music technology, computer composition) , and be able to demonstrate competent problem solving and analytical abilities. A keen interest in this particular area of the research is essential. Competence in audio signal processing, programming and knowledge of music theory/computer music composition (e.g. ability of score reading, A level music, ABRSM grade 5+) would be a significant advantage.

The studentship is open to EU candidates and includes a tax-free stipend (identical to the standard EPSRC rate) for up to three years, plus PhD tuition fees at home student rate over the same period. The stipend will be £12,940 per annum for the 2008-09 academic year.

PhD project: Jan Hendrik Oort and the rise of radio astronomy in the Netherlands
The Leiden astronomer Oort made his name in the 1920s and 1930s through his studies of the Galaxy. From the 1940s onward, he became a pioneer in the new field of radio astronomy, together with his pupil H.C. van de Hulst. Their efforts culminated in 1970 in the foundation of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, at the time the world’s largest radio telescope. The aim of this project is to portray the rise of this new field of research from personal, institutional and political angles and to explain how the Netherlands became a centre of observational astronomy. Important source material is located at Leiden University. This includes the papers of Oort and Van de Hulst
This project will be supervised by Prof. F.H. van Lunteren. The PhD-researcher will participate in the activities of the small group of historians of science of the Leiden Observatory.

Job description

We search for a doctoral student to study applications of space techniques to global and regional earth observations. The focus will be in particular on geodetic space techniques such as Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) (e.g. GPS, GLONASS, and the future European system Galileo), and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR).

The measurements performed with these techniques result in parameters such as crustal motions, earth rotation parameters, and the atmospheric water vapour content. These parameters describe the global change on our dynamic planet on various temporal and spatial scales and are of major importance in geophysical and climate research. The techniques have different technique-specific advantages and strengths for global earth observations and are complementing each other in terms of the sensed parameter space, accuracy and resolution. To make use of these techniques in a best possible way with a holistic approach, the individual accuracy and stability needs to be investigated (and possibly improved), and strategies for a combination and integration have to be developed.

One focus of the project is the combination and integration of GNSS and InSAR data and analysis to study crustal deformation phenomena. Other subject areas are GNSS applications to monitor sea level changes and seismic events.
Qualifications

A suitable background is a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in physics, electrical engineering, or an equivalent degree, including an experience and/or a strong interest in measurements and data analysis applied to the atmospheric sciences.

You will be employed as a doctoral student by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your working time will be devoted to duties at the department, mainly teaching of undergraduate courses. The remaining time will be devoted to your own research education, where the aim is to complete your PhD examination within 5 years (nominal time without department duties is 4 years).

PhD in urban surface energy

PhD position (3 year stipend £19k/year fees to be paid from stipend) who will work with others at King’s College London (KCL) on two European Union FP7 funded research projects to evaluate urban surface energy, water and carbon exchanges through in situ observations, remote sensing analyses and modelling. The KCL component of these projects involves the determination of fluxes for London using the techniques outlined below. Results from this science will be used (1) to develop a decision support system for sustainable urban planning, accounting for urban metabolism; and (2) to assess impacts of megacities on local, regional, and global air quality and climate. The research objectives will be to determine the magnitude and spatial variability of the fluxes and their controls in relation to these applications.
A variety of methods will be deployed during the research, including micrometeorological techniques (e.g. eddy covariance, large aperture scintillometry) to determine local scale fluxes, and analysis of ground?based, airborne and satellite hyper?spectral optical and thermal IR data to determine the surface energy balance. Numerical modelling will involve urban land surface schemes and their application in WRF.
The post holder will work with Professors Sue Grimmond (sue.grimmond@ kcl.ac.uk) and Martin Wooster (Martin.Wooster@ kcl.ac.uk) and their existing research teams to deliver cutting?edge research into urban surface energy, water and carbon exchanges.

Urban Meteorology: The EMM Group’s research on urban meteorology has centred around its
investigation of energy, water and carbon exchanges using micrometeorological techniques, numerical modelling and remote sensing methods in a variety of urban areas (North America, Africa, Europe).

PhD-project in coupled vibrations in hydro power rotors

With new operating conditions and aging machines in the hydro power industry, rotor dynamic research in this area is becoming more important. The need for reliable operations of the hydro power machines is of worldwide importance, and to this end the development of better simulation techniques and methods are necessary. When failures do occur, it is important that dynamical questions regarding the cause of the failures can be identified and answered.

As such, there is no other international group today that continuously works with rotor dynamics in hydro power units. Therefore it is expected that our research will have an important impact even at the international level. At LTU and Vattenfall VRD, we have been doing research in rotor dynamics since 2001, leading to several research projects and new findings that have been published in international journals. There are many crucial rotor dynamic issues in hydro power applications. Some examples are rotor interaction with bearings, fluid-rotor structure interaction and electromagnetic fields. We are working in all areas through collaborations within the Swedish hydropower centre (SVC). SVC was initiated 2006 and has as aim to develop competence within the hydro power technology sector. An outcome of the several workshops is the decision by the SVC to initiate a new research project in coupled vibrations in hydro power rotors. Coupled vibrations have
been studied extensively in rotor dynamics and it has been found that coupling can result in unexpected vibrations, and in some cases failure due to self excited motions or parametric excitations. The target in the project is to determine when such problems can occur and also find out the causes of the problems. Thus, we are now searching for a new PhD student in Solid Mechanics to work on these issues

Method

We work with both analytical and numerical methods to study the rotor dynamics. For numerical simulations, we usually use Matlab or own programs, but we do also have access to several other commercial programs should they be required . The new models should be evaluated either in test rigs ( LTU or Vattenfall research & development) or in real hydro power stations. Since several problems are of nonlinear nature, it becomes essential to use nonlinear methods in the work.

Suitable background

The requirement for the appointment is a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Physics directed towards mechanics. A strong analytical interest is more than desirable for the project to run smoothly. It is traditionally difficult to attract females to the field of mechanics. Therefore we are actively working for an environment which attracts both females and males

Job Description

This is a full-time job is in the areas of computer graphics, mathematics, geometry, and physics. This is a part of the 3-year Singapore Media Development Authority funded project entitled “Visual and Haptic Rendering in Co-Space” which commences on 15 December 2008. The work will be carried out in Singapore at the School of Computer Engineering of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The goal of the project is to propose an efficient interoperable mathematical model defining geometry, visual appearance and tangible physical properties of virtual objects in shared Co-Space - 3D virtual shared space on the web. The object definitions must be small in size and invariant to the rendering platform used in Co-Space. The particular goals of the project include development of the fast interactive definitions by implicit and explicit functions, description of complex geometry using parametric partial differential equations, introduction of function-defined physical properties to objects in Co-Space, and development of several exemplar applications illustrating the usefulness of the proposed approach, including an ability to establish physical contact with other party in Co-Space through haptic devices.

The project includes but not limited to the following tasks which will be shared between the researchers and graduate students working on the project:

Job description: The two positions are part of a new Grundfos Programme in Inter-cultural Management at Aalborg University and cover the following topics: Position no 2008-562/05- 0240 Cross-border Organisation and Management of R&D Activities: The Case of Grundfos A/S Position no 2008-562/05- 0241 Managing Networks of Relations Between Global Production Subsidiaries of Grundfos A/S - From Culture as a Barrier to Culture as Synergy The two PhD positions will have Grundfos A/S as their empirical basis. The first position will focus on the global R&D subsidiaries of Grundfos with a particular emphasis on how to organize and manage global innovation centres. Specifically, the study must include the following issues:
• How to move from a centralised to a global strategy and organisation
• How to enhance customer driven R&D within Grundfos A/S, and
• How to utilise inter-cultural synergies between the R&D centres located in different parts of the world.

The second position will study the integration and coordination of the global production subsidiaries of Grundfos A/S, focusing particularly on how to build a global management model. Specifically, the study must include the following issues:
• How to enhance global efficiency and process innovation at the production level of the company.

The applicants will be enrolled as PhD students at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Aalborg University and will be attached to the Centre for International Business, Department of Business Studies. The two positions aim to strengthen the research and teaching capacities within the field of inter-cultural management. One of the two candidates will be employed by Aalborg University, and the other by Grundfos A/S. Applicants are expected to have strong analytical abilities and exhibit high degrees of independence and maturity in their research work. They are also expected to be capable of collaborating closely with industry and managers.
Qualification requirements: The PhD scholarship has a duration of three years. Applicants to the PhD scholarship must hold a Masters degree or graduate with a Masters degree in the very near future (documentation for final thesis and date of examination must be enclosed the application) . Fudan University Detailed Implementation of the 2009 “Chinese Government Special Scholarship - Postgraduate Program”

In order to increase the cooperation and understanding between the people of China and other countries, develop outstanding international talent and improve the perception of China’s higher education, under the mandate of the Department of Education, Fudan University is opening application for full-time postgraduate studies under the 2009 Chinese government scholarship program.

In order to facilitate the implementation of the Chinese Government Scholarship, the following detailed implementation has been issued in accordance with the “Chinese Government Scholarship Application Method”

I. Scholarship scope and distribution

1. The Scholarship is aimed at assisting Master’s and Doctorate candidate students who apply for Fudan University in 2009.

2. 30 Scholarships are available for 2009.

3. Scholarship scope:

- Students are exempt from registration fees, tuition, laboratory fees, internship fees, study materials and accommodation costs;

- A living stipend is provided (Masters Students 1700RMB/month, Doctorate Students 2000RMB/month) ?

V. Application time and approval process

Application is open until the 15th of April, 2009.We will count on the postmark.

1. Applicants should send the application materials to the Fudan University Foreign Students Office. The Foreign Students Office will pass the application materials of qualified applicants to the relevant department;

2. After inspection and comment, the departments will return the materials to the Foreign Students Office within the allocated time.

3. The final results will be made by the Review Committee of Fudan University for International Students Scholarships. Fudan University will report the results to the Chinese Government Scholarships Council for approval.

4. Fudan University will send the admission notice and Visa Application Form (JW201) to the successful applicants right after the results are approved by the Chinese Government Scholarships Council

VI. Scholarship recipients must go to Fudan University to register on the date stipulated by the university. Students who have not received permission and arrive late for this process will have their Scholarship status automatically cancelled.

PhD Neuromodulatory mechanisms during learning and decision-making-Zurich

The Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research is a newly
founded research centre at the University of Zurich that investigates
the principles underlying social and neuronal systems
(http://www.socialbe havior.uzh. ch/index. html). Funded through a
generous donation by the Branco Weiss Foundation, this laboratory is
being established as a highly interdisciplinary institution with a
novel research concept. Bringing together scientists from the social
and natural sciences (incl. neuroscience, economics, psychology, and
physics), it studies the mechanistic links between neuronal circuits
and human social behaviour, using a combination of brain imaging
methods, neuropharmacologica l techniques, behavioural experiments and
computational approaches. A single custom-built unit hosts multiple
state-of-the- art facilities that are fully dedicated to research.
These facilities include a Philips Achieva 3T MRI scanner, as well as
laboratories for EEG, transcranial magnetic stimulation,
psychophysics, behavioural group studies, peripheral & autonomic
neurophysiology and pharmacology. Additionally, we have access to a
7T high-field human MRI facility.

PhD studentship: fMRI and modelling of neuromodulatory mechanisms
during learning and decision-making

The Computational Neuroeconomics group led by Prof. Klaas Enno Stephan
invites applications from prospective PhD students. The research in
our group focuses on (i) experimental and computational investigations
of brain connectivity, synaptic plasticity and neuromodulatory
mechanisms during learning and decision-making and (ii) translating
the results into clinical applications. To this end, we perform fMRI
and EEG/MEG experiments and collaborate closely with theorists,
physiologists and clinicians. Our group is highly interdisciplinary
and international in composition, with English being the working language.

We offer a PhD studentship that is funded for 3 years with an annual
salary according to the Swiss PhD salary scheme (increasing from CHF
38,000 in year 1 to CHF 44,000 in year 3). This project, which is
conducted in collaboration with researchers at the Wellcome Trust
Centre for Neuroimaging at London, concerns neuromodulatory mechanisms
during learning and decision-making and contains both experimental and
modeling aspects. The experimental work includes establishing novel
learning and decision-making paradigms and obtaining fMRI measurements
of healthy volunteers under pharmacological manipulation. The
behavioral and fMRI data will be analysed using a combination of
dynamic causal modelling (DCM) and computational models. The balance
of experimental and theoretical components of this project can be
adjusted depending on the skills and interests of the successful
applicant,

We seek talented and highly motivated candidates who have a strong
interest in combining experimental and modelling approaches and who
are looking for a vibrant, highly interdisciplinary and well equipped
research environment with strong international collaborations. Good
programming skills are essential. Previous experience with fMRI data
acquisition and analysis, MATLAB and SPM are not required, but
advantageous. Experience with Bayesian statistics, machine learning
techniques or dynamic systems theory would be an extra bonus.

The Open Society Institute’s International Higher Education Support Program
(HESP) launched the Academic Fellowship Program (AFP) in 2004 to
support and guide higher education reform in South Eastern Europe, the former
Soviet Union (excluding the Baltic states), and Mongolia. Although the program
readily evolves to meet the changing and varied educational challenges of the
region, its aim remains to achieve lasting higher education reform by assisting
progressive university departments and by supporting promising
scholars who teach at these departments after they have returned from abroad with an
internationally competitive Master’s or other postgraduate degree.

Recognizing that universities play a fundamental role in strengthening
civil society, AFP focuses on higher education reforms that will bolster open,
democratic societies.

Changing the Face of Education

Higher education reform in the countries targeted by AFP is often
impeded by lack of funding, ineffective education policies, poor planning and
management, reliance on traditional curricula that emphasize passive rather than
active learning, limited flexibility in career choices, corruption, and
elitism.

The Academic Fellowship Program seeks to diminish these obstacles by
contributing to the reform of higher education and helping to build
academic networks locally, regionally, and globally. The program focuses on
aiding both the educational institution and the individual scholar in two main ways:

* AFP assists reform-minded departments in their efforts to achieve
world-class academic stature and become models of innovation and
reform in their region.
* AFP supports promising young scholars by promoting their return
to the region, their positioning within academe, and their continued
professional development within a healthy academic setting. To achieve these goals,
AFP offers two fellowship programs: the Returning Scholars Fellowship
Program and the International Scholars Fellowship Program.

Returning Scholars Fellowship Program

The program, as part of a conscious strategy to combat “brain drain”
in the social sciences and humanities, supports talented scholars who, after
earning a Master’s or other postgraduate degree abroad, seek university
positions and academic careers in their home countries. Securing the services of such
scholars is essential to the revitalization of academic departments
and the sustainability of higher education reforms. The program offers
financial, professional, and departmental development support, as well as
opportunities for further professional growth as AFP alumni.

Fellowships comprise monthly stipends and various allowances, including
departmental and professional development funds, and are renewable. It
is important to note that Returning Scholars are supported only in AFP
partner departments. An interested scholar already associated with a
department that is not an AFP partner will either be ineligible for the fellowship or may discuss the possibility of relocating to a qualifying department at a different university.

Returning Scholars benefit from an innovative online instrument, the AFP
Academic Webfolio Project. Essentially a collective academic workshop,
it provides AFP fellows an open forum to present academic materials that
reflect their professional development as scholars and university teachers.
Posting the materials encourages fellows’ self-reflection and allows for ongoing
peer and expert review and commentary. The Webfolio website’s open, community
nature provides a convenient and effective opportunity for scholarly dialogue,
collaboration, assistance, and access to the collective academic
expertise of AFP fellows and faculty members of AFP partner departments.

Starting with the 2007/08 academic year, the AFP Academic Webfolio
Project also serves as the platform for the work of AFP’s new Discipline Groups.
These groups were established to facilitate academic interaction and
cooperation among all AFP fellows in the same academic discipline but at/from
different universities. The Discipline Groups’ activities will be greatly aided by
features available on the Webfolio website.

International Scholars Fellowship Program

The program selects highly qualified scholars in the social sciences and
humanities to assist AFP partner departments where Returning Scholars
are placed. The International Scholars advise on the overall reform agenda
of the departments and share with departmental colleagues the latest
developments in their discipline, collaborate on the introduction of new courses, and
encourage the development of skills critical to academic work. Perhaps the
greatest, and most needed, contribution of International Scholars is the expert
advice they offer on curriculum development and academic planning.

International Scholars share their experience with Returning Scholars
and the entire department on a consultative basis. They work on-site with the
departments during two or three short and intense visits, and remain
in touch with colleagues between visits. International Scholars play important
roles in the Webfolio Project by mentoring individual Returning Scholars and
commenting directly on fellows’ webfolios within their Discipline Group, both
during and between visits. The details of such arrangements as travel and work
plan are negotiated on an individual basis during the selection process.

Fellowships generally include a modest stipend, transportation,
accommodation, and various other allowances. Fellows may re-apply the following year.

Program Effectiveness

AFP fellows are placed in departments that have been carefully
selected as AFP partners. Partnerships are established on the basis of the departments’ openness to change and advancement, and clear visions for future
development. Returning Scholars working in such environments will find the support
and encouragement they need to launch and pursue their academic careers
while at the same time contributing to the development of the departments.
Partner departments are encouraged to take the lead in recruiting qualified
Returning and International Scholars whose professional profiles match
departmental needs.

Selection of Partner Departments

Departments are chosen based on several criteria: awareness of the
need for educational reform, demonstrated willingness to embrace change, and
concrete, realistic plans for achieving lasting reform. AFP gathers detailed
information on departments at universities throughout the region, using written
questionnaires, interviews, and site visits. Departments meeting program
criteria are invited to submit detailed proposals for AFP support, outlining
their plans for development over the course of several years. Based on
these proposals, AFP selects the most promising departments for
collaboration. A current list of partner departments can be found below.

AFP partner departments benefit in many ways from the presence and
activities of International and Returning Scholars. AFP invites fellows to submit

Alumni Involvement

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2009/2010

Erasmus Mundus (covering the period 2004-2008) is the EU co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. The Erasmus Mundus programme’s overall aim is to enhance the quality of European higher education by fostering co-operation with third countries in order to improve the development of human resources and to promote dialogue and understanding between peoples and cultures.

The programme’s specific objectives are to:
Select high-quality integrated masters courses which are offered by a consortium of at least three higher education institutions in at least three participating countries (Action 1);
Give scholarships to highly qualified graduate students and scholars from third countries to follow or participate in the selected masters courses (Action 2);
Select high-quality partnerships between selected masters courses and third-country higher education institutions (Action 3);
Select projects of at least three institutions in at least three participating countries aiming to improve accessibility and enhance the profile and visibility of higher education in the European Union (Action 4).

All Actions are managed by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
Who’s eligible?
Action 1 – Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses

The Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses should be offered by a Consortium of higher education institutions recognised as such in one of the 27 Member States of the European Union, one of the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein & Norway) or one of the candidate countries for accession to the EU (Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey). Three higher education institutions coming from three different eligible countries constitute the minimum ‘Consortium’.

Please note that EEA-EFTA States and candidate countries only participate in the programme as far as their participation has been formalised in agreements between the European Community and these countries (see the Directorate General for Education and Culture Erasmus Mundus Website for further details)

Action 2 - Scholarships The Erasmus Mundus Masters Consortia provide scholarships to third-country graduate students to attend an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course for a minimum duration of one and a maximum duration of two years. Furthermore, third-country scholars may receive scholarships for teaching and research assignments, lasting on average three months. The scholarships are awarded exclusively to third-country graduate students and scholars who have been registered to an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course.

For the definition of third-country graduate students and scholars and the eligibility criteria for this Action please consult the Call for Proposals.

Action 3 - Partnerships Erasmus Mundus Masters Consortia selected under Action 1 can establish a partnership with at least one third-country higher education institution.
In the framework of this Partnership, outgoing mobility allowances are available for European students and scholars offering them the opportunity to spend a short period of time at third-country partner universities.
Action 4 - Enhancing attractiveness

Higher education institutions and other public or private bodies active in the field of higher education from all countries of the world can implement a project aiming at improving the image, visibility and accessibility of European higher education. The minimum project partnership should constitute of three institutions / bodies coming from three different participating countries (EU Member States, EEA-EFTA states and candidate countries).

Third-country students and scholars as well as European students and scholars interested to attend an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course should apply directly to the selected Erasmus Mundus Masters Consortium offering the respective Course. Detailed descriptions of the already selected Erasmus Mundus Masters Consortia can be found on the Directorate General for Education and Culture Erasmus Mundus Website.
Higher education institutions should submit applications for Action 1 to the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency according to the application procedures described in the Call for Proposals. Applications for Actions 2 and 3 can be submitted only by selected Erasmus Mundus Masters Consortia.
Higher education institutions and other public or private bodies active in the field higher education should apply for Action 4 to the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency according to the application procedures described in the Call for Proposals.

Training has long been a key component of the U.S. government`s development program in Indonesia. USAID/ Indonesia plans to support the tradition through the Human and Institutional Capacity Development (HICD) program that will provide academic degree training. The HICD program is structured in a way that will help individuals acquire the knowledge, skills, and the capacity to support Indonesia`s development and the achievement of the Government of Indonesia/USAID` s objectives.

USAID has awarded a contract to the Academy for Educational Development (AED), a U.S. non-government organization (NGO) to support the implementation of the HICD program in Indonesia. AED is now inviting Indonesian citizens to study for Master`s Degrees in the USA in
1) Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management and

1. Master`s Degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management
